Statement on Tribal Sovereignty and Self-Determination

Purpose
This affirms our commitment to respecting and protecting the inherent sovereignty and self-determination of Tribal Nations and establishes principles to guide our actions and relationships with tribal governments.

1. Recognition of Sovereignty
   We acknowledge Tribal Nations as sovereign entities with the inherent authority to govern their people, lands, and resources.

2. Commitment to Self-Determination
   We support tribal self-governance and decision-making without undue interference, ensuring tribes have full control over programs, services, and policies affecting their communities.

3. Consultation and Consent
   All actions impacting Tribal Nations will involve meaningful consultation and require free, prior, and informed consent.

4. Opposition to Paternalism
   We reject policies and practices that undermine tribal autonomy or perpetuate dependency, including those historically associated with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

5. Collaboration and Partnership
   We will work in partnership with Tribal Nations to advance mutual goals, respecting cultural values and traditional knowledge.
